ESCHER • TOYAMA PREFECTURAL MUSEUM OF ART AND DESIGN • TOYAMA, JAPAN

04/27/2024 – 06/30/2024

Escher (official name Maurits Cornelis Escher(1898-1972, Born in the Netherlands) is a printmaker who is popular with many people around the world, from mathematicians and artists to children, giving surprises and discoveries to those who observe his works.

His works are characterized by an elaborate, geometric art style that utilizes human vision and illusion, such as "tessellation (spread all over)" which completely covers a plane in a certain way and "Metamorphose (transformation)" in which one shape gradually transforms into another.

With the full cooperation of the Netherlands' M.C.ESCHER FOUNDATION, this exhibition will introduce approximately 160 works, ranging from Italian landscapes from early in his career to "trompe l'oeil" masterpieces. There will also be a place where you can experience the works of Escher through sets modeled after his works.

This is an exhibition where we who live in a digital society can enjoy the charm of Escher, who created a richly imaginative world using the method of printmaking.
