FILLING THE VOID – ESCHER AND BEYOND STADTGALLERIE BRIXEN • BRIXEN/BRESSANONE, ITALY

01/20/2017 – 20/28/2017

Escher is the best known, but not the only artist who has measured himself against the periodic isometries of the plane, to put it in scientific terms. Before him, Koloman Moser, an exponent of Viennese Art Nouveau, did it and after him, a group of contemporary artists such as Andrew Crompton, David Hop, Hans Kuiper, Francine Campagne, Alain Nicolas, Robert Fathauer and Sam Brade.

The exhibition Filling the void – MC Escher and beyond at the StadtGalerie (Galleria Civica) in Bressanone offers a review of the graphic works of these artists: a total of 26 works, mostly prints. Each of them is accompanied by a graphic card that highlights and illustrates the characteristics. Among the works on display are eight tessellations by MC Escher and some aperiodic tessellations by Richard Hassell.
